| Nell'estate 2012 la città ha messo in campo trionfalmente le proprie capacità in un evento che ha imposto Londra a tutto il mondo. I giochi olimpici hanno mostrato ciò che sappiamo fare fissando un obiettivo, perseguendolo, affrontando le sfide in modo condiviso. Oggi la sfida principale è lo straordinario boom dei londinesi. Ci avviamo a diventare dieci milioni per il 2030, tante persone a cui fornire una casa e un lavoro, oltre che mezzi rapidi e comodi per spostarsi dall'una all'altro. Possiamo già vederne alcune di case già realizzate in modo eccezionale nelle zone speciali di Battersea, Royal Docks, Greenwich e Croydon. Avremo bisogno di almeno 400.000 nuove abitazioni per i prossimi dieci anni, in quartieri verdi e sicuri, con vivaci centri servizi, e non certo di qualche grattacielo conigliera. Tutta la storia di Londra ci dimostra che si possono costruire nuove case e creare posti di lavoro solo se essi sono collegati da una superba rete di trasporti. Certo, magari nel 2020 finiremo tutti per spostarci con degli zainetti a reazione portatili, ma fino ad allora dobbiamo continuare a investire nei mezzi che conosciamo oggi. Non solo Crossrail – che è la più grande opera europea del suo genere – ma il passante Crossrail 2, prolungamenti della metropolitana, gallerie stradali, un parco autobus a basse emissioni, una costanti rivoluzione ciclistica coi mezzi a due ruote che solcheranno la città su piste veloci riservate. Dobbiamo riflettere sulla grande occasione rappresentata dalla fascia urbana orientale, dove sarebbe possibile collegare un porto in acque profonde a un nuovo aeroporto, a formare un polo logistico in grado di creare centinaia di migliaia di posti di lavoro. I nostri figli dovranno essere formati e orientati anche ai settori creativi, tecnologici, della comunicazione, ambiti nei quali Londra eccelle. Ce lo insegna l'esperienza dei giochi olimpici: la città è in grado di esprimere progetti straordinari. La Londra post-olimpica ha ancor molto da dire in quanto luogo di lavoro, residenza, tempo libero, investimenti e attività. Una città che sta guidando tutto il paese verso l'uscita dalla recessione. Mio obiettivo è quello di confermare Londra come la più grande città del mondo. |
In the summer of 2012, this city put on a triumphant performance, an event that sold London to the world. Those Olympics showed what we can do if we focus and plan and agree on the challenges facing our city.
Today our number one challenge is the amazing boom in the number of Londoners. We are going to hit 10m by 2030, that's a lot of people who will need jobs and homes - and a quick and convenient way of getting from one to the other.
Already we can see where those homes could go, fantastic opportunity areas at Battersea, the Royal Docks, Greenwich and Croydon. We are going to need at least 400,000 new homes in the next ten years with safe and leafy neighbourhoods and vibrant town centres - not high rise rabbit hutches. And the whole history of London tells us that you can only build new homes and create new jobs if you can link the two with a superb transport network.
And of course it may be that by 2020 we will all have learnt to commute with jetpacks but until then, we need to invest in our existing transport modes. Not just Crossrail - the biggest engineering project in Europe - but Crossrail 2 together with new tube extensions, new road tunnels, a fleet of clean, green buses and a continuing cycling revolution that will send your bike criss-crossing the city on cycle superhighways.
We need to think now about the vast opportunity that lies in the east where we could link our new deep water port with a new airport in a logistics hub that would generate hundreds of thousands of jobs. We are going to need our kids to have the skills and confidence to get jobs in the creative, tech and media industries in which London now excels. We need to remember that Olympic lesson, that London can pull off amazing projects.
Post Olympic London has an amazing story to tell as the best place to work, live, play, study, invest and do business. Of a city that is leading the UK out of recession and my goal is to lengthen London's lead as the greatest city on earth. |
